This is actually something missing in the Ubuntu GTK3 theme. Nautilus 3.2 adds a style class to icon canvas items that allows themes to define how the selection area should be rendered.

As a reference, here's the relevant snippet in Adwaita:

So it's theme specific? The Zukitwo theme seems to have the same problem.
