GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 661863
Wallpaper moves in y-axis when activities is pressed
Last modified: 2013-04-10 20:14:00 UTC
The wallpaper moves in y-axis when you press the activity button. It seems like it moves about the size of the top bar (or the bottom bar which is shown in activities). I'm using ubuntu 11.10 with gnome-shell 3.2 and all the wallpapers I have tried does exhibit this problem. To recreate the problem. Start gnome shell, when having no application on the workspace simply bring up the activity window and look closely at the wallpaper. The attached file has just workspace with no applications as one layer and activities as a second layer, the layers are mixed using difference in gimp and notice the wallpaper shows differences (I did this as I could only attach a single file :) ). The wallpaper I have selected is meant to be http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5135/5572440917_a456d72687.jpg
I reckon you have set up Nautilus to draw the desktop?
Its ubuntu standard but I bet it is with all the unity stuff. I can right click on the background and choose wallpaper and create folders so I suspect thats due to nautilus as I wasn't able to do that in fedora
Just to confirm if I select in dconf that nautilus should not fade on change of background it does not fade when I switch. So its clearly nautilus who is in charge of drawing it, atleast in without activities up. I cannot find any way to make nautilus to not do it though, I found some references about show_desktop to false but when I tried that in gconf it did not work. Anything in particular I can try to give more information about this problem? Thanks for the help!
The key in question is "show-desktop-icons" from org.gnome.desktop.background (use "gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons false" to unset it); however, I'm unable to reproduce this issue with stock-nautilus, so I tend to suspect that the problem lies with one of the patches Ubuntu applies on top. Do you have the possibility to try if you can reproduce the problem with unpatched nautilus?
I just installed gnome-tweak-tool and I was able to turn of nautilus from handling the desktop. This made it work fine so the problem is only in nautilus. Its probably patches ubuntu put on top of nautilus which is to blame then, atm I don't really have ability to try it but I'll look into how much it would take to compile and test, I'm guessing it would be a rather invasive to test it and this is somewhat of my production machine :) I'll see if I can compile vanilla though, thanks for the help!

This is obsolete, since Nautilus doesn't draw the desktop anymore in 3.8. 696159 is a similar bug, could have been related to this.
