Require the user to explicitly pick a window if there's more than one available (1.22 KB, patch)

Description Jasper St. Pierre (not reading bugmail) 2011-10-07 17:20:08 UTC
Instead of using the MRU window of an app to determine which gets activated, we should be asking
the user to explicitly pick which window they want more.

Even if we don't want this behavior, the window previews are probably a nice addition.

Require the user to explicitly pick a window if there's more than one available

If there is more than one window in the same application, the user should be
required to explicitly choose the one they want to transport to instead of
falling back to the MRU

Maybe (just maybe), in the case where there is exactly one window of the app, the dash should still ask the user whether he wants to open a new window or present the already opened one?
Comment 4 Jasper St. Pierre (not reading bugmail) 2011-10-20 15:00:21 UTC
The bad answer: Windows 7 does it this way, and I'm used to Windows 7.

This is a patch without any design team input. Marking ui-review.
Comment 5 Julien Olivier 2011-10-20 15:55:55 UTC
I have never used Windows 7 so I might be wrong, but from what I heard, the main difference between the shell and Windows 7 is that, in Windows 7, re-clicking on the app icon launches a new window of this app while in the shell, after clicking on an app icon, the dash disappears and so you can't easily, and without using the right click, launch a new window if the app is already running. That s*cks for regular PCs, but that su**s even more for touch UIs. I really think that gnome shell needs a simple way to launch a new window of an app using the mouse left button.

I'll test when I get back home, but I've tried double-clicked on the app icon, I always right-click on the app icon to open a new window. You can also click and drag the jumplist out. Items in the jumplist often open a new window.

Oh yes, that works, even though it's not really intuitive :)

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
