Description igor.redhat 2011-10-03 20:11:51 UTC
I much prefer to run external monitor connected to laptop in --same-as setting (xrandr --output VGA-0 --same-as LVDS, the resulting setup is shown in bug 660596). This way, my windows set up is left largely intact on the laptop monitor whenever I need to disconnect it from the external monitor to, say, go to a conference room - as opposed to the extended monitor setup where windows placed on the external monitor just "disappear" when it's disconnected. I've no idea how common my preference is but I'd personally love to have a native support for it in control-centers Display settings.

Are you using this setting purely to work around an obvious bug? If that's the case, we should just fix the bug. :)

Well, by now I'm so used to running things this layout that I just plain prefer it this way. But I guess one could say that the reason I started with this setup was due to what can be considered a bug.

Basically, when an external monitor is disconnected, the layout of windows shown on that monitor is pretty much lost, which didn't work very well for me. I guess I'd ideally prefer all those windows to be places in a new/separate workspace with a layout as close to the original as possible. And then it should be restored to the external monitor again when it's reconnected. Does this make any sense? ;)

Do we have bugs against gnome-shell about the behaviour of windows when the monitor they were on disappears?
Comment 4 Bastien Nocera 2014-06-03 17:43:16 UTC
This is clearly requested to work around gnome-shell misbehaviour. Please file a gnome-shell bug about gnome-shell's problems handling windows in multi-screen environments when screens disappear.
