Description Máirín Duffy 2011-09-06 13:20:14 UTC
I am initially filing this against gnome-screensaver but I am not sure if it is the most appropriate place.

I was listening to a podcast last night. I was listening to it pretty loud so I could hear it over the fan. My system suspended (probably because it was close to running out of battery) at some point during the night.

I got into work this morning, plugged my laptop in, opened up the lid, and regaled everyone sitting near me with a blast of Jillian Michael's fitness podcast - embarrassing. What to do? I desperately tried to turn the sound off or down, but nothing happened when I pressed the buttons. I shut the lid hoping it would shut up, and it did.

Now what? I have to use my laptop to work, but if I opened it up again it would start yelling at everyone in the office to eat right and exercise. I considered going to the ladies' room and 'diffusing' it as you would a bomb. Then I got the clever idea to plug my headphones in, unsuspend it, log in, then kill rhythmbox.

This is a seriously messed up situation. Would it be possible / reasonable to support muting the sound when the system is in screensaver mode? I could see it being useful too when a coworker has to leave their desk and their system starts making sounds, that you could turn down the sound even though you're locked out of their system.

Thanks for your consideration.
