The Live search box is shown at the bottom of the contacts list window which, with the default GNOME 3 look is somewhat unhelpful as the window resize overlaps the box which:

a) looks ugly
b) partially obscures the clear button, which is the key way to get out of live search
c) was the wrong end anyway as if live search is working properly then its miles away from the results the user actually wants to look at

Makes sense, especially now that the "invite contact" dialog uses live search as well and display the entry at the top.
