Description Julien Olivier 2011-08-04 13:22:53 UTC
In the shell's overview, if you select the "applications" view instead of the "Windows" view, the dash should be hidden. This would prevent application icons to be displayed both in the dash and the applications list. More over, if you switch to the "applications" view, that probably means that the application you're looking for is not in the dash. And the same thing can be said about the "search result" view.

How would you add applications to the dash?
Comment 2 Julien Olivier 2011-08-04 15:46:54 UTC
Well, you can right-click on the icon and select "add to favorites", or you can launch the application, then right-click on the new dash icon and select "add to favorites".

The goal of simplifying the overview is a good one. Drag and drop seems like a nicer mechanism for adding apps to the dash though. Also, hiding the dash would conflict with the plan to remove the mode switch:

I think it's bad enough the Dash is limited to the Overview, limiting it even further and thereby preventing simple DnD operations in an area where app icons are actually organized/managed seems even worse.

Furthermore, if a user was adding/removing icons from the Dash, they'd have to flip back and forth between the views to check on the result of their actions. That seems really bad to me.

This has landed in 3.6, so the dash is needed to get out of the application view now.
