The screenshot says it all. I have seen this issue as well and the problem goes away automatically as soon as I open empathy preferences.

Is that your avatar or your contact's. Which protocol is that?

"Is that your avatar or your contact's"
If we start to chat the avatar is of the both memebers, my message have mine his message is associated with his avatar.

i believe its not specific to any protocol. The launchpad bug report is seeing this issue with MSN I faced with gtalk.
Comment 3 Omer Akram 2011-08-07 15:44:41 UTC
I can reproduce this problem. The problem is 100% reproduce able on a clean install of Oneiric(probably live cd as well). As mentioned before after opening empathy preferences the problem vanishes

this happens when empathy is started for the first time after Ubuntu 11.10 install, one launchpad commenter observed that starting empathy from the terminal gives

.config/dconf/user could not be written

As I wrote above starting the preference from Edit>Preferences fixes the issue for the install.

I think it is failing to set the theme, perhaps an apparmor issue?
Comment 7 Ken VanDine 2012-02-24 15:38:36 UTC
Ah, in ubuntu we are defaulting to an adium theme but not setting the theme-variant by default.
