Description acharis 2011-08-02 14:46:45 UTC
John's father's sister's sister-in-law could be either John's mother or John's father's sister's husband's sister.
Comment 1 Jordi Mas 2011-08-10 21:10:10 UTC
That's fine, but the question says:

Choose one of the following:

- His mother
- Has no relation
- His son in law
- His cousin

As you see, you have just to selec the correct one from the four given options. If there are more valid options is fine, but that's out of the scope of the question.

Thanks a lot for your fedback

"John's father's sister's husband's sister" is arguably "no relation", since
it is no relation by blood. therefore, two of the answers are correct, while the game only accepts one.
Comment 3 Jordi Mas 2011-08-11 06:16:38 UTC
I'm saying that can be more correct answers, my point is that the game asks you to select the correct one from a given list.

Thanks,

the given list contains two correct answers, while the game thinks it only contains one:

        <analogy>
                <_question type = "MultipleOptions">John's father's sister's sister-in-law is also?</_question>
                <_answer correct ="yes">his mother</_answer>
                <_answer>has no relation</_answer>
                <_answer>cousin</_answer>
                <_answer>son-in-law</_answer>
        </analogy>

Thanks!

We agree that "His Mother" is one correct option.

I would appreciate if you can elaborate which one is the other second option that you consider correct and why.

Thanks so much,

Jordi,

Thanks a lot for your patient. The fixes introduced in this final version
include also the fix for issue 650579.

John's father's sister's sister-in-law is also? Do not assume that John has any
relative that has not been mentioned.

A) Her mother (correct)
B) Her aunt
C) Her cousin
D) Her son-in-law

Rationale: The sister's sister-in-law is John's father's wife, that is, John's
mother.

John's mother's brother's brother-in-law is also? Do not assume that John has
any relative that has not been mentioned.

A) His father (correct)
B) His uncle
C) His cousin
D) His son-in-law

Rationale: The brother's brother-in-law is John's mother's husband, that is,
John's father

I will appreciate if you can confirm that this will work for you.

Thanks,

Jordi,

there are a few issues here. the main one is clear from your rationale.
the word "brother-in-law" or "sister-in-law" doesn't refer uniquely to a single
relative. you can think of this as some kind of deformity in the english language.
but it makes statements like in your rationale: "... brother-in-law is ..." not totally correct. the right way to say something like that is "... brother-in-law can be...". now of course nobody talks like that, since we use some context to
determine who a speaker is referring to.

the problem that's left in your proposed versions above is that in each of them
B) is still a correct choice. yes, that's how messed up english is. now, you have
tried to deal with this by putting in your sentence: "Do not assume that John has any relative that has not been mentioned." but there are some problems with that:
1) it's a long sentence and we don't want people spending too much time just reading clarifying materials and 2) none of the relations given as choices have
been mentioned.

proposal:
1) take out the second sentence "Do not assume..." in each
2) make B) in each some relation to which the phrase in the question does not refer.
3) change the "Her" to "His" in the choices for the first question for gender agreement.

Thanks a lot for your time and clarification

can you please put a concrete example of "make B) in each some relation to which the phrase in the question does not refer."?

That would help a lot

Thanks,

Jordi,
