http://developer.gnome.org/integration-guide/stable/thumbnailer.html is outdated.

Registering thumbnailers now doesn't require a gconf schema anymore, but just a
.thumbnailer file in /usr/share/thumbnailers. This file is similar to a
.desktop file. See for instance

The thumbnailer documentation has been added to gnome-desktop:
