Description Alan Jenkins 2011-06-29 10:51:06 UTC
splash screen appears, orca says "Wel-".

Orca window opens, orca interrupts itself and says "Orca Screen Reader slash Magnifier frame".

splash screen disappears, orca says "preferences button".

Tested in: Stock Ubuntu (Classic Gnome (no effects)), package gnome-orca 3.0.0-0ubuntu2, reported as <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-orca/+bug/802906>

Tested in: Ubuntu, with Orca from Git - ORCA_3_1_2-13-g5812b1c.

Tested in: Ubuntu, Orca from Git as above, and an upstream version of the metacity window manager (metacity-2.34.1.tar.xz), replacing the version of metacity packaged by Ubuntu.

This doesn't seem to happen all the time. I'm not sure what is affecting it. If you can't reproduce it yourself, I would try creating a fresh user on your system, setting orca up from scratch, and seeing what happens when you log in. Maybe try both with and without the automatic "run on start" option (which can be controlled in the GNOME asssistive technologies preferences dialog, under "preferred applications".

I noticed something else odd, even when this error isn't happening. If you press "escape" while the welcome message is being read out, the welcome message stops, but the splash screen remains up for a while. It looks like the splash screen might be working off a fixed timer. (Expected behavior: splash screen should close as soon as you press escape).

The reason we have a splash screen for a screen reader (i.e. in which most users will not ever see the splash screen) is to ensure that we cause the window manager to trigger the events we need so that we present the window that gets focus. Otherwise the user won't know where he/she is.

I'm not sure if your expected behavior would impact our reason for having a splash screen in the first place. And I think we have far more important things to worry about. Especially given that we already have a flag which makes it possible to disable the splash screen if it bothers you.

As for the 'welcome message' getting cut off. This fix solves it for me:

Fair enough! Unfortunately, the welcome message is still getting cut off for me.

(Pretty sure I'm running the right version of Orca. I can see your commit in "git log", and the build I'm running now _does_ fix Bug #653642 (the alt+f4, Escape thing I reported).

I'm still running metacity as my window manager, not the pretty-but-badly accessible alternatives.

debug.log from orca with cut-off welcome message

In case you can't reproduce it any more, here's my debug.log from running this:

$ orca --debug & sleep 5; kill %1

I continue to not have this problem. Are you seeing the problem in Orca 3.4 or master?
