GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 652971
no option to set InfoMsgFile or banner file
Last modified: 2018-05-24 10:36:11 UTC
There is currently no option to set InfoMsgFile or banner file to use motd or other files in gdm.
I was about to open a similar bug when I found this one, but it was opened about 3 weeks ago with no reply yet. Note, this is documented here: http://library.gnome.org/admin/gdm/stable/configuration.html.en#greeterconfiguration and this used to work for all versions of GDM >= 2.22. Before this version you would set the InfoMsgFile config setting. Now, after updating to Fedora 15, which comes with GDM version 3.0.4, this no longer works, although the gconf schema is still present. I noticed that other components of GNOME 3 are being migrated from gconf to gsettings, but I don't see any gsettings schemas for GDM yet. I posted a message to the GDM email list and one reply indicated that this should still work, unless a bug slipped in. So, should the gconf config still work and this is a bug, or is GDM being converted to gsettings and this conversion is incomplete resulting in broken config options? ~Jason
Actually my script that was setting /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/banner_message_enable failed to set it to true if it was unset instead of false, so this is working for me in version 3.0.4, although the greeter window is much smaller than it used to be and now when setting a long banner message, it completely fills up the entire window leaving no room for the username entry or user list, making it impossible to login with a long banner message. ~Jason
After upgrading to Fedora 16, which comes with gdm-3.2.1.1, the gconf settings as described here no longer work: http://library.gnome.org/admin/gdm/stable/configuration.html.en#greeterconfiguration and I don't see any equivalent configuration options in gsettings. How do I set a custom banner message in GDM version 3.2?
I also want to set a banner message for the gdm greeter with Fedora 16.
