GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 652340
Umlauts missing in several Gnome Applications
Last modified: 2011-06-19 19:56:40 UTC
Binary package hint: gnome-shell I installed gnome-shell and gnome-themes-standard via the gnome3 ppa [1] and it's fantastic, really good! There's only one problem, I face with gnome-shell on amd64 and i386. There are no umlauts in several gnome applications, e.g. gnome-terminal and all dialoges of update-manager and gedit. In the terminal, a "ß" is replaced by "ss" and all other German umlauts are replaced by "?". If I want to update my Ubuntu, the update-manager shows me the button "Pr?fen" (German word for "Check"). In Firefox, Eclipse and Empathy, all umlauts are working. I tried updating the language settings, but all are correctly installed. Here are the technical information: Description: Ubuntu 11.04 Release: 11.04 gnome-shell: Installiert: 3.0.2-0ubuntu1~build1 Kandidat: 3.0.2-0ubuntu1~build1 Versionstabelle: *** 3.0.2-0ubuntu1~build1 0 500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnome3-team/gnome3/ubuntu/ natty/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status I thought this is just a small error, but as it occurs on amd64 and i386, I think it's severe. [1]: http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnome3-team/gnome3/ubuntu Original bug on launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/793055 ----------------------------------------------------- In addition to the original bug: Since 2011-06-07, on i386 the bug does not occur anymore, on amd64, it still persists...
GNOME Shell doesn't have anything to do with font rendering in applications, so it's definitively not a shell issue - it's probably in pango or gtk+ from the ppa. Did you also install applications from the ppa? Firefox and Eclipse are not GTK+ applications, so it's not too surprising that they behave differently. On the other hand, Empathy working correctly is interesting - is it using gtk+-3 and affected applications use gtk+-2 (or the other way round)? Also, as this is a locale issue, you should provide your locale settings (e.g. de_DE.UTF8).
I don't see any sense in upstreaming issues that are probably Ubuntu-only and Ubuntu's GNOME3 team should probably clarify where they want to receive feedback.
Yeah, as I said downstream, Ubuntu's GNOME3 team have a tag system that allows them to track their bugs in Launchpad. So we can probably close them upstream unless they explicitly say something is wrong in GNOME itself.
I believe this is a bug with the GDM 3 packaging in a Ubuntu PPA and thus should be INVALID here for GNOME. GNOME Shell doesn't control the locale for GNOME apps anyway.
