GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 65195
Should be a specific tool for drawing straight lines
Last modified: 2008-07-29 16:29:08 UTC
I think that drawing straight lines should be made with an own specific tool. The method using the shift key is kind of difficult to use. Also, if you decide to implement this, I think that the statusbar should show real-time information about angles and steps (i.e. 10;20) meaning that one have stepped 10 pixels vertically, and 20 steps horizontally. That could be really useful.
This feature is requested rather frequently. Some people have argued that the Gimp is not a drawing tool and does not need these features, but on the other hand several other paint programs have tools for drawing lines and shapes. Let's hope that someone finds the time to implement this...
For me that works just by holding down the shift key why using the Pencil or the Brush tool. So, why I think it's not necessary to create a extra tool for this.
Some people are happy with the Shift-click method, some people aren't. But if this was made into a separate tool, there are other nice features that could be added (information about angles and steps, as reported by Hakon). Anyway, maybe all this will not be necessary if a future version of the Gimp includes some support for vector graphics and the appropriate tools to draw and manipulate these vectors. See also bug #68915.
Changes at the request of Dave Neary on the developer mailing list. I am changing many of the bugzilla reports that have not specified a target milestone to Future milestone. Hope that is acceptable.
Targetting Future, although once again I'm wondering whether this is really something which is worth implementing. Dave.
There's now a hint in the statusbar that tells the user that a straight line can be drawn by pressing Shift.
Upgrading target to 2.6 because this should at least be addressed in the context of creating vector layers, although the proposal here might not be followed.
This doesn't need to block the release. Moving it from the milestone.
A tool for draing line would be handled by 65197, duplicating. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 65197 ***
