GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 651410
Please add PPPoE over Wireless for Network-Manager
Last modified: 2012-07-27 07:27:36 UTC
Please add PPPoE over Wireless for Network-Manager. Ubuntu uses "pppoeconf" and Fedora uses "pppoe-setup" for this task, maybe Network-Manager could borrow the implementation from this distros? Now that more and more people use Wireless for connection to the internet, I hear a Lot of complaints about Linux inability of giving this option. Now DSL configures automatically to use Ethernet but maybe it could just set the same settings for the Wireless interfaces too? Even if it will be just a hack, would be great to have before version 0.9 of Network-Manager...
I have never seen a usecase for PPPoE over Wireless. Isn't the wireless modem also working as a router? Any devices out there that need PPPoE done by a desktop/laptop? I'm afraid this is such a marginal case that it's valid to ignore it in NetworkManager.
There is a big usage of it. If you didn't hear of it or don't need it doesn't mean there is no such thing. Universities use it, companies use it... I'll give you an example of a big University that I won't name. Every student has to create an account when they get enrolled. The network(Wireless network) of this University is extended on about half of the city, in order for a student to connect to the University network they have to connect through PPPoE to the network and introduce the username and password. It's one account for all the services it provides: Portal, Email, SVN, Internet(Network)... There were a lot of IT students that wanted to use Linux but they were forced by limitations to get back to Windows in order to have access to the Internet... Btw, Android and iOS have support for it too... All the operating systems introduced that option, even the mobile ones. Linux Desktop is the only exception.
This looks like a good reason to reopen. But... I don't think anyone is interested enough to implement it.
I'm afraid that by reopening this, I'm keeping just another enhancement request that will stay here for years. I'm not putting it into wireless as it most probably doesn't matter whether the PPPoE is done over wired or wireless ethernet.
That's the problem. The PPPoE feature works great but it automatically assigns itself to the ethernet port while it could give you options. Also, I thought it will be easy to implement because this feature is already implemented in Fedora and Ubuntu and the implementation could be taken from there...
PPPoE over Wi-Fi is on to-do list and is tracker in bug 559134. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 559134 ***
