GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 651158
Alt key should not change behavior of suspend/shutdown menu item
Last modified: 2011-05-26 15:10:30 UTC
First, I don't ever "suspend" my desktop machine. When I leave work for the day, I shut down the computer (to save electricity and be all "green"). "Suspend" is not the most common use case. Second, pressing and holding the 'alt' key shouldn't change the behavior of an individual menu item. This is non-obvious and not intuitive behavior. Only after some googling about the missing shutdown button (while wondering why the hell anyone would remove such a button), did I stumble upon a tip about the alt key. Making it especially bad is that there's no indicator on the menu to tell me that holding a particular key does anything. Also, holding the alt key to toggle a menu item is also not a behavior seen anywhere else. Menu item behavior shouldn't change when you hold down a particular key. Googling shouldn't be required to figure out how to turn off the computer. This isn't Mac OS X. Add a damn "Shutdown" option to the menu and make it obvious.
