Description Toralf Lund 2001-11-21 12:32:56 UTC
When (root of) location is "start-here:", "programs:", "preferences:" etc.,
tree view shows local file system tree. I'd prefer it to display a tree
corresponding to the special URL in question. This would be particularly
useful for "programs:"

To reproduce:
1. Open a new window.
2. Enter "programs:" in Location: field.
3. Select "Tree" tab in Sidebar Panel.

Actual result:
Tree representation of file system is dispayed.

Expected result:
Tree representation of "Programs" menu is displayed.

An interesting idea.

One downside is that if the tree view shows only the special URL
tree, then you can't get to other files on the disk with it. But I'm
not the best person to comment on this because I'm not an avid tree
view user.

Maybe you're right. Perhaps there ought to be two different views, or
some kind of mode selection for the tree.

Anyhow, the whole point is that I think we need *some* way to switch
directly between program groups. Given that, I don't think I would
ever use the "Programs" menu again. As anyone who has ever used SGI's
desktop may have discovered, a multi-level icon window is really a lot
more convenient than all those tedious menus...

I think the only other node that would make sense is applications://
since all the other special directories basically contain launchers
that are accessible from applications anyway.

Also if we decide to add a favorites folder in the future than having
a node for favorites would be nice as well.

basically bug 62524 covers this issue more in depth so marking this as
a dupe of it
