Description Julien Olivier 2011-05-16 09:00:59 UTC
When I use several workspaces, I like to think of each workspace as an isolated desktop, totally unconnected to the other ones.

The problem with the current workspace implementation is that this isolation concept is broken in two ways:
 1) ALT-TAB presents the list of all windows, on all workspaces, instead of only the windows in the current workspace
 2) When clicking on the launcher of an already running application, it jumps from the current workspace to the first workspace where an instance of this application is already opened. I think it should, instead, open a new instance on the current workspace.

I have already opened a bug report for the second item (gnome bug #650030), but I mention it again because I think it's conceptually related to the first item.

PS: here's a blog post talking about the first item: http://blog.kov.eti.br/?p=186
I decided to report this bug when I understood that at least one person expected the same thing as me, but didn't bother to report a bug for that.

Sorry, but this is not a duplicate of bug 621287. Bug 621287 is about focusing a window from another workspace when pressing alt-tab, not displaying window from other workspaces.

Nope, look what the guy says "I think we could really improve the consistence of workspaces and reduce uncertainty by switching windows only within the current workspace".

Perhaps the choice of words for the summary wasn't the best, but that can be changed.

The thing is that bug 621287 went from one thing to another. So, if you want to make this one a duplicate of bug 621287, please also update bug 621287's description.

See the proposed fix:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=191612

It's the same bug. Why do you want to keep this open?
Comment 6 Julien Olivier 2011-08-04 05:20:18 UTC
As I said in comment #4, I have nothing against closing this one as a duplicate of bug 621287, but only if its description is updated, bevause this bug is not at all about "First Alt+Tab action should never focus a window out of current workspace".
Comment 7 Milan Bouchet-Valat 2011-11-13 20:44:42 UTC
My bug 621287 was indeed slightly different, as it could be solved without isolated workspaces strictly speaking, but since discussion and patches happened there, let's mark this one as a duplicate. In the unlikely event where bug 621287 was solved without adding the workspace isolation feature, please comment there, or reopen this one (but I doubt it).
