Description Richard Ullger 2011-05-11 21:59:54 UTC
When Gnote starts on login to Gnome (both Gnome 2 & 3) it starts as an application with the Search All Notes window instead of as a panel applet. If you close the Search All Notes window it closes Gnote.

If you subsequently start Gnote from the Gnome 2 menu or from gnome shell applications, it starts minimised as a panel applet, as it should.

This is a known issue. This is an issue in Gnote design (actually inherited from Tomboy):
1. Gnote can be added to panel as an applet
2. When started as an application, Gnote tries to build it's UI around an icon in notification area
3. If Gnote fails to add icon to notification area, the UI is built around the search all notes window

What happens in your case is that gnote is started by session too early and fails to add icon to notification area, so the UI is build around Search All Notes window. The next time you start Gnote, it succeeds in adding icon to notification area (this is different from applet, though functionally looks almost the same).

I'm planing to change the behavior in the future versions of Gnote - Search All Notes window is going to be the main window of Gnote.

Thanks, I've changed gnote so that it starts up inside a wrapper script with a delay to ensure it starts in the notification area.
Comment 3 Aurimas Černius 2011-06-01 20:30:00 UTC
Since we're going to drop use of status icon and use Gnote as an application with Search All Notes window as main, there's no point to do anything regarding this issue.
Comment 4 Aurimas Černius 2011-06-27 20:45:08 UTC
As this requested was also received elsewhere and was easy to fix as part of other features, I fixed this issue.
This will go to the next release.
