Description Tate 2011-05-02 09:15:35 UTC
The "Album Artist" metadata tag is a great thing. iTunes has officially switched to using the "Album Artist" as its primary organizer. I personally collect many CD's as a hobby and love getting every album of my top 50 artists. I love listening straight through an artists albums chronologically by their release years. iTunes was great for this (especially their latest version) because they had an "Album Artist/Year" organizer with the cover art on display as well. The Banshee browser organizes albums by name... that is terrible. I hate it and will not use Banshee until first the "Artist" (left of the artworks and albums) is changed to "Album Artist" and second the albums are arranged by artist and chronology. Organizing by "Artist" is a terrible idea due to compilation albums and song duets etc.

Is there a way to do this?

For Ubuntu, Guayadeque music player is by far the best (perfect organization, MusicBrainz Picard implementation, lyrics, Last.fm, cover art browsing with manual organization availability, radio, podcast, Ampache, and so much more perfection) but its sound quality is unbelievably terrible and unusable as a result.

Will Banshee ever get perfect customizable organization like Guayadeque?

Here is an example of what I am talking about in the first attached image:

Notice that in the Browser, the album art of each album corresponds to the "Album Artist" tag - that is good, but they are collectively organized by name rather than by "Artist" or "Album Artist/Year"
Also notice that in the Artist section of the browser, I have so many artists that come from a single Norah Jones compilation album called "...Featuring" in which she sings many duets... I hate that. I want to sort by "Album Artist"

The question stands. Can Banshee organize its browser by "Album Artist"? Or will it ever be customizable to fit every music lover's organization needs?

Also, I attached some screenshots of Guayadeque and the organization that I have customized to fit my need.

In the second image's upper right corner there is a drop menu to organize albums in various ways. I like that!

In the third image I have customized my browsers to display only "Album Artist" and "Album." But I could add a category for each tag category (artist, year, genre, etc.). I like that too. Can Banshee organize its browser by "Album Artist"?

The bug report you're looking for is bug 540873. Quite a bit of work has been done on this feature in a separate branch, but I'm not sure off the top of my head what the current status is or how close it is to being merged into the main Banshee branch.

> The Banshee browser organizes albums by name... that is terrible.

I agree that this doesn't make much sense, and it's being tracked as Bug 561109. There's a patch there that does what you request, but I'm not sure what the current status is.

I'm marking this as a duplicate of bug 540873, but feel free to reopen it if I misunderstood any of your points, and don't hesitate to report any other bugs you find.
