Description G. Michael Carter 2011-04-15 15:13:43 UTC
When I work I tend to have one project per workspace. Every once and a while I'll get related projects in four or five.

The way I'd group them would be: (Usually I had 2 rows of 4 or 3 rows of 4 workspaces)

email == Terminal Windows == ARU Web
                ||
            PTS Processes

Then when flipping back and forth the terminal window is where I spend most of the time. Then I can CTRL-ALT Arrow between the four, with only one shift usually.

With the new Gnome 3 their all stack horizontally. I could be CTRL-ALT Arrowing several time to get from workspace 1 to workspace 8.

Would be nice if we could auto add in both directions vertical and horizontal.

I too want this. GNOME Shell is totally unusable without this workflow for me. I am ready to write some patch as well for this if someone can show me pointers. Any help ?

Unfortunately we don't have any current plans to do this.
Comment 3 Sankar P 2011-06-08 15:40:39 UTC
@William And there is no way a patch will also be not accepted for this ? If so, what will be the solution for all those who had the better navigation model with the prior GNOME releases ? They should switch to some other desktop ?

If you write a patch, make it an extension, and the people you're speaking of will simply install it. The core design is meant to work best for most people, and those that have special needs shouldn't change it. But extensions are always welcome (we can reopen the bug and assign it there if you start working on this).

See http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Extensions, and feel free to ask for help on IRC too.
