GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 647285
It crashes occasionally on opening logfiles
Last modified: 2020-09-26 09:41:07 UTC
Created attachment 185588 [details] backtrace and memory map Can occur with any logfile, happens occasionally. After restart the attempted logfile is succesfully opened in the viewer. Did start gnome-system-log in terminal and ended up with a backtrace and memory map, see attachment. Hopefully it is of any use.

I had the same problem under archlinux, and it's apparently happening when you click on File->Open and choose a log file 3 or 4 times

I am having this consistently using the package in Debian (Wheezy). I'm using version 3.01 of the log viewer, the latest in the Debian repositories. I've downloaded the sources for 3.21 to try that version. Procedure: Install the package. Run the app The app initially shows no logs. Open a first log. Fine. Open a second log (a related minor but annoying bug happens here in that the file open dialog now defaults to my home folder instead of to /var/log). Upon selecting the log file from /var/log the entire app window disappears.
PS. Upon re-opening the app, the second log DOES appear. This happens with the third and fourth logs. However, I can't get a fifth log to appear yet under any circumstances tried so far.

gnome-system-log is not under active development anymore and had its last code changes more than four years ago. Its codebase has been archived at https://gitlab.gnome.org/Archive/gnome-system-log/ Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect reality. Please feel free to reopen this ticket (or rather transfer the project to GNOME Gitlab, as GNOME Bugzilla is being shut down) if anyone takes the responsibility for active development again.
