Description Federico Mena Quintero 2011-04-08 18:45:02 UTC
Currently, you can ask Nautilus to open a folder window by running

  nautilus file:///home/federico/Downloads

or even the non-URI version, /home/federico/Downloads.

However, if you run

  nautilus file:///home/federico/Downloads/somefile.txt

You get an error message, 'Could not display <filename>. The location is not a folder."

Being able to make Nautilus go directly to a folder and highlight a particular file would be very useful for programs that provide "upward circulation" for your files [1]. Both Firefox and Evince have an "Open containing folder" command, but unfortunately it only makes Nautilus show the folder that contains the file you are visiting, instead of also highlighting the file.

I guess the current startup-notification machinery would already take care of providing the correct timestamps for showing the new window, and all that.
