Description sharky 2011-04-06 02:02:30 UTC
I have been recording transactions into my current data file for over two years now, so it's starting to get pretty heavy.

About 10% of the time, after pushing the save button, the data file goes missing. Usually, pushing the button again rectifies the problem. I have seen this bug occur many times, but I am not sure how to make it happen every time. It seems fairly random.

This is a very scary bug!

Because this bug once caused me to lose irreplaceable data, I have developed the habit of always checking, after saving, that my data file has not disappeared. Now I will not close the app before I have verified that the data file has been successfully written to disk. This has spared me most of the pain this bug could inflict, but it's a horrible user experience.

Today I observed this bug on a fresh installation of Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 LTS, running GnuCash 2.2.9.

Thank you for your bug report. Obviously this behaviour is not good.

I should start by saying you are using a version of GnuCash that is no longer actively supported by the GnuCash developers. I do see you are using the LTS version of Ubuntu, and I am aware that 2.2.9 is the version that ships with that distro.

On the other hand GnuCash 2.4 fixes several subtle bugs regarding saving files. So it would be great if you had a way to test that version instead and see if you can still reproduce this. I don't know however if and how you can get GnuCash 2.4 in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, as I don't use Ubuntu myself.

I thought this is bug #593479, fixed in 2.3.16 (last october) and any subsequent version.

Exactly, that was the bug I was thinking of.

By the way, that bug also holds a patch that can be applied to gnucash 2.2.9. If Ubuntu cares to continue support for 2.2.9 and wants to fix this bug, all they have to do is apply the proper patch from there.
