Description davincci22 2011-04-01 06:47:56 UTC
I have been using Ubuntu for about 2 years now and I've never liked Rhythm Box because it always plays "sea shells" (all I hear is static) with my songs. Plus I always preferred Banshee day one.
Anyways, the issue is that every new song that plays is played at deafening volumes, far more than my laptop speakers were made to handle because I can actually hear the distortion in playback. Is Replay gain on or off? It doesn't make a difference for me. Whether I turn it off and quit Banshee then restart doesn't make a difference. And it's the same thing if I turn it on and quit.
Lastly, I saw similar bugs to this but the few that I read were for Banshee 1.5 so that wouldn't apply (I would imagine?). By the way, this is my first time ever using Bugzilla, so go easy on me if I just couldn't read through all the volume-related bugs.

What version of Banshee?
Comment 2 davincci22 2011-04-01 17:38:01 UTC
Version 1.8.1. Thanks for the reply by the way.

Another thing I forgot to add/specify was that it plays at 200% when I have in headphones and about 150% when using my built-in speakers. If you want I can record it and upload a sample.

Can you test with Banshee 1.9.6?
Comment 4 davincci22 2011-04-02 02:04:24 UTC
I really don't like using Betas/RCs and the like but, I'm guessing that you think it should fix the issue. Right? So I'll go ahead and try it and get back to you with feedback. Hopefully, it's as stable as my current version or more so.

If you use git master, it's days away from being labeled 2.0.0. But 1.9.6 should be quite stable too.

Days away? Kool but, I tried 1.9.6. Now this comes with two faults and some welcomed new features.

First, the bad. The issue still isn't fixed. Increased volume still pummels my ears! And again, I've tried enabling "Replay Gain", quitting and restarting... even logging out. What I have to is to go into my sound prefs. and turn it (Banshee entry) down to 50% to save my ears, but then I have to turn it (Banshee UI volume) up all the way to hear the songs properly enough.

The other issue is VERY minor. The "Notification Area Icon" does not blend in with my dock (has a grey background), but that's ok. I will probably fix that myself (I'm not a complete newb/noob lol).

As for the good. Clutter-flow... Niiiicccee.
Comment 7 davincci22 2011-04-02 07:40:42 UTC
OK, a little update on the volume issue. When "Replay Gain" is enabled, it doesn't always amplify the volume. In fact, where as in v1.8.1 it would do so after each new song, it only happens about 40-50 (45%) of the time. :D

So I'm guessing that this will be gone by v2, hopefully. Thanks again for the support. Much appreciated.

A Debug log from a run with and one without Regain enabled might be useful:

Oh and there where some volume changes after 2.0 was released. Testing using either the daily ppa or 2.0.1 (which should be released soon) might reveal that the problem has been fixed.

"A Debug log from a run with and one without Regain enabled might be useful"

Actually, it won't be necessary anymore. I actually forgot that I USED TO have that issue lol. Version 2.0 actually did fixed the issue. :D
Thanks again!

Glad to hear it! I'm closing this report, but feel free to reopen it if you run into the issue again.
