Description Allan Day 2011-03-29 18:24:35 UTC
It would be nice if we could give users a cue to go to the activities overview when they first run GNOME Shell. This would remove any potential confusion or uncertainty as to how to get started.

A subtle pulsing glow behind the text could work well.

I think the best option would be to open Activities as soon as the computer starts, and then add a visual hint as to how to open Activities again as soon as you do anything that closes the overlay.
Comment 2 Mantas Kriaučiūnas 2011-05-11 07:20:08 UTC
For most users the best option would be to display Activities (launcher with icons on the left and list of recently used files) as soon as the computer
starts, and then add a visual hint as to how to open Activities again as soon
as you do anything that closes the overlay.
What GNOME developers thinks about this issue?

Let's keep the discussion of that in 648456. (It is relevant though.)

I've seen many people clicking activities, we should instruct them somehow that it's not necessary, having to click there changes the whole experience and it is something people tend to get wrong, probably for familiarity reasons with windows.
So not really sure about a glow alone, some sort of sublte help text may be needed.

This bug is gathering dust, and seems largely superceded by https://live.gnome.org/GnomeOS/Design/Whiteboards/GettingStarted
