We have separate bugs filed for a more general problem but we may need a short term fix for 3.0.

There should not be a white box around the monitor/background-preview.

This is due to the Adwaita .notebook background-color style being inherited by the drawing area.

We don't want to forward e.g. the background color to notebook child,
because the notebook is just used as a container.

Forget this, Bastien attached a patch to the GTK+ bug report which makes this unnecessary.
