Description Hannie 2011-02-19 14:53:51 UTC
Device --> Create Partition Table.
Comment 1 Curtis Gedak 2011-02-19 16:34:45 UTC
Thank you Hannie for your interest in GParted.

Did you build gparted from source code or are you using a package?
If a package then which distribution package are you using?

This menu option should have three dots following "Create Partition Table".

The menu option in the source code is as follows:

Device --> Create Partition Table...

The three dots (also known as an ellipsis), is a common way to indicate in a graphical user interface that the menu option will bring up a dialog box, and not simply perform the menu option.

This has been done as per the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines:
http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/menus-design.html.en#menu-item-type-command

Hello Curtis,
I have recently finished the Dutch translation of gparted (GUI, 3.0, see http://l10n.gnome.org/vertimus/gparted/master/po/nl). I found the message Device --> Create Partition Table. and wondered if this should not be ...
Meanwhile I have added the ... to the Dutch translation, but I thought it wise to
report a bug for the English message (I use the Dutch version of gparted myself).
Greets,
Hannie

Thank you for the clarification. I thought that this was the actual menu item, but it is not.

In the translation file this message is correct with a single period, because it _refers_ to the menu item, but is not the actual menu item itself.

I recall reading somewhere in the GNOME documentation guidelines that when referring to a menu item, the three dots are not used. Instead normal sentence punctuation should be used.

I am now trying to find where I read this reference, and will report back with the reference when I do.

Finally found the reference in the following link:

http://library.gnome.org/devel/gdp-style-guide/stable/gui-2.html.en

The relevant text is as follows:

   Write the names of dialog elements and menu commands as they
   appear in the GUI. If the name includes a colon or an ellipsis,
   do not include that punctuation when you refer to the item in
   your documentation.

Does that help clarify this situation?

Do you think I should add a tip for translators regarding this situation?
Comment 5 Hannie 2011-02-19 21:04:54 UTC
Your explanation is very clear, thank you for this. Now that I read it again I see that it is not the menu item itself but a reference to it. So I must replace the ... with a dot in the Dutch translation.
Thanks for your help.
Hannie

You are welcome.

And thank you for your translation efforts. Your work makes GParted easier to use for even more people. :-)
