Description mike 2001-11-10 18:04:03 UTC
Package: panel
Version: 1.4.0.4
Severity:

>Synopsis: Panel crashes on startup. Segmentation fault.
>Class: sw-bug
System: AMD CPU 733 MHz, Red Hat Linux 7.2, Kernel 2.4.7.10. Just upgraded glibc from Red Hat.

>Description:
Started Gnome from the Red Hat login window. When it tried to start the Panel, it crashed with the message 'Application "panel" (process 1373) has crashed tue to a fatal error. (Segmentation fault.)'

>How-To-Repeat:
Start Linux in run level 5. Get login window. Log in as root (new system, no users yet). Everything works fine. Log out. Reboot system. Repeat, and Panel crashes.

I have been having this problem since installing Red Hat 7.2 on a new machine. I have tried three video cards, and that makes no difference. I have reinstalled RH 7.2 three times, and no difference. During one of the installs, I defined real users, and the Panel crashed with them as well as root.

A couple of times, Gnome crashed before trying to start the Panel - with a competely blank screen. In those cases, I couldn't even log into a system console (typed root, hit Enter, and no password prompt appeared). I had to hit the power switch.

Also, I have tried the hard drive DMA off, but that doesn't make any difference.

Any advice or suggestions? Thanks.
