GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 642287
Change the search box text
Last modified: 2011-02-19 23:39:00 UTC
It currently reads 'Search your computer'. Couple of things that are wrong with this: * It specifies the kind of device * It focuses on local search (we also do web search stuff now) * It doesn't advertise the instant search functionality 'Type to search...' would be my choice of replacement text.
Created attachment 181258 [details] [review] search-entry: Update hint text 'Search your computer' is problematic for various reasons: - it specifies the kind of device - it focuses on local search (while we also do web search) - it does not advertise the instant search functionality Change the hint text to 'Type to search' as proposed by Allan Day.
Maybe we also need a translator comment WRT to string length? Will the entry grow as needed if the text is longer than it's default size? In French for example, there's no immediate or natural translation, and it would be good to explain translators what the text is about so that they can find a different but better/shorter expression. In French, a naive translation would be "Saisissez du texte pour effectuer une recheche", which would be far too long (not sure what a good translation would be, though).

Good point. > Will the entry grow as needed if the text is longer than it's default size? No, unfortunately not. In fact, the limit is rather tight ... > In French, a naive translation would be "Saisissez du texte pour effectuer une > recherche" Hey, imagine German! (Though I honestly have no idea how to translate that)
Review of attachment 181263 [details] [review]: Looks good even though I agree that it is hard to translate ex. German "Tippe um zu Suchen" sounds weird and other languages might have a length issue ... but well it it the translators job to come up with something ;)
(In reply to comment #4) > Looks good even though I agree that it is hard to translate ex. German "Tippe > um zu Suchen" sounds weird and other languages might have a length issue ... Yeah, glad I'm not a translator ;-) Attachment 181263 [details] pushed as 136ed36 - search-entry: Update hint text
