Description DoNotRelease 2011-02-04 07:52:00 UTC
neither readable NOR understandable what all those application mean to do.
I am frustrated.
Just compare this with other destops.
What are you, guys, gonna release? Raw rotten fish?

I am more than confident that this UI will be released with Gnome3 and anounced as the revolution in ever since CDE desktop. By and large - EPIC FAIL!

P.S.
I really didn't want to even file the bug coz it's soooo obvious.
Anyway trolls from LOR have pushed me to fill this form.
Comment 1 DoNotRelease 2011-02-04 08:00:44 UTC
Yup, this was the same look in Fedora's live Gnome3 image, which they kindly asked to test during their "test day".
Comment 2 Jakub Steiner 2011-02-04 11:51:29 UTC
Not quite sure what you want to achieve with this general rant. If you want to file specific bugs for lacking metaphors for specific app launchers (which is what I am guessing you mean here), please do so.
Comment 3 d1337r 2011-02-04 12:29:37 UTC
I guess for one thing, he rants on the icon texts being cut very short (the better solution would probably be wordwrapping them) and on the texts themselves being too small (as in "even iOS and Android phones with smaller screens have bigger fonts")
Comment 4 Yar Kirillov 2011-02-04 12:31:24 UTC
Is it possible to disable the reduction of the text?

Alternatively, the search shows 3 ~ 5 items as large icons and the rest of the list is smaller.

In any case, it's not a bug. Although something I agree with DoNotRelease.
Comment 5 Jakub Steiner 2011-02-04 12:51:49 UTC
Icon label ellipsis is something that has no relation to the gnome-icon-theme and is being addressed by not having labels on the dash and limiting the number of items in the app picker.

Comment 7 Vitaliy Tokarev 2011-02-04 16:54:36 UTC
I am agree with DoNotRelease, because solution with tooltips is not a solution of described problem. Many people must remember how looks icons when much easy to read what is typed under icon.
In that case, Gnome 3 will be have option in settings to change this behavior or not?
Comment 8 Aleksandra Bookwar 2011-02-04 17:04:51 UTC
I don't think the tooltip is a solution, just another part of the big usability problem here.

May be the application names could be improved? just use the shorter words, and develop good naming rules

I understand, why this bug is closed, but i would file a new one about naming then.
Which component should this be?
Comment 9 DoNotRelease 2011-02-04 17:32:46 UTC
Well my report is kinda overemotional, but actually such a look of icons’ and labels is really eye cutting.
To my mind it is a MUST for the DE to present clear and non-invariant meaning of the icon shown.
Instead of that on the main page there is a holly mess.
I am also not able to contemplate that gnome devs have not tested or used iOS/Android products, but why we see such a result during the final stage of development process. It is surprising.
A also give my vote for the bug in post#6

yeah, pls tell us where to post the new bug, as what we see on gnome3.org page and Fedora test image is absolutely not ready for production, at lest for me
Comment 10 Jakub Steiner 2011-02-04 18:20:59 UTC
FYI the label ellipsis issue is tracked as bug #636655
