- The applets aren't getting the colouring from below
- The text isn't made white
(There's already a bug about the symbolic icons not getting recoloured)

It's a theme issue, as far as I can tell.

    Handle better panel applets.
    
    A gradient was clobbering the background-color set in
    the css rules for the panel applets. Fixes bug #641425,
    reported by Bastien Nocera.

Bug is still there in alpha version of Gnome 3 at http://gnome3.org/tryit.html

Panel has black background and screen looks the same.
