Could you please provide your full xkb config:
xprop -root | grep XKB

I am asking because on my system the label "Return" is in the _top_ left corner

Ok, I can reproduce it.
This is the tricky one - predicting the position "left border + padding" for the arbitrary shape of the key. Hints are welcome.
