GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 639415
Need a VOIP group in the communication roaster
Last modified: 2011-11-14 09:19:04 UTC
This report was originally filled at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/701816 When wanted to make a SIP call phone with empathy, I actually need to clic on the letter roaster in the gnome status-bar, choose "chat" which opened empathy window. Then choose "chat" in the application menu and then choose "New call". This is really not intuitive nor optimized (4 clics to make a phone call - it should be 2 or 3) and "chat" on which I need to click is not really the action I want to since I want to make a voice call. So either the "chat" name of the category is not a wise choice, either you need to add a new category named VOIP.
I agree that 'Chat' is not the best naming for this menu; do you have any suggestion? Ideally, we should be able to add SIP contacts to your roster at some point, that should make things easier.
Maybe you could named it RTC? (Real Time Communication) and create 2 submenus : chat and VOIP. The trick is : is RTC enough intuitive? But if you create these submenus "chat" and "VOIP", people will understand. It's just an idea ;)
RTC seems like a verry poor name, I'm not even sure I would have understand it myself. :p
Empathy 3.2.1 doesn't allow to add sip contacts. It be really useful to have a bunch of them on the sidebar in order to do quick and easy calls.
Actually things improved a lot with GNOME 3.2. You can now place SIP calls from Empathy (if they are linked to an IM contact) and gnome-contacts (see http://blog.desmottes.be/post/2011/09/27/Calling-phone-numbers-in-GNOME-3.2 ). The last missing bit is calling a phone only contact from Empathy which is bug #657438 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 657438 ***
