GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 639399
Can't change our nick in XMPP rooms
Last modified: 2018-05-22 14:35:21 UTC
In bug #638766 we disabled /nick in XMPP rooms. Ideally we should support that feature, but I'm not sure of the best semantic of /nick in this case: A) Change our nick only in this room. B) Change our nick in all XMPP rooms C) Change our nick everywhere (including our 'roster' one) Atm Gabble doesn't support changing nick in rooms so https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33048 would have to be fixed first. I don't think C) is a good idea as /nick is pretty room specific.
I think that Alias per room is what is the expected behavior. To change the rooster one, you may just edit your display name.

Empathy is still giving me trouble when trying to set/change nickname. Right now "alias" in account settings should be enough, and indeed it sets the nickname the first time I connect to the server. However after some time (I'd guess that some disconnection has happened) my nickname is reset to the first part of the jabber address (before the @) and I can't fix it whatever I do: * "/nick" does not work * "alias" in account settings seems to have the correct nickname, and does not change anything when I try to set it to something else. I think this bug is still valid. If not then how can I change the nickname on Jabber chat rooms?
I am still seeing this (sometimes also on first connection, but not always) in Empathy 3.12.9 inside GNOME 3.16.
