The custom menu bar does not set the height properly for the menuitem.
As a consequence, the menu looks bigger than it should.

The attached screenshot shows the problem.

Backtrace

I got a backtrace doing the following in a xterm inside my jhbuild
and Xephyr:

$ gnome-session remove gnome-panel
$ gdb gnome-panel
(gdb) run --g-fatal-warnings
(gdb) bt

The signal 'size-request' is deprecated and it is used for render
imagemenuitem.   It must be ported to its equivalent in gtk3.

This bug was fixed by Carlos García Campos in gtk3 branch:
