GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 638724
split-screen view of multiple places in a document
Last modified: 2015-11-29 18:15:20 UTC
There should be a way of splitting an evince window vertically and horizontally, and being able to scroll independently through the document in each of the "splits" (i.e. separate view-panes in the window).
Same problem for me. It would be convenient to be able to split the view of a document in several sub-windows for instance when reading text while keeping an eye on a figure or on the bibliography of an article. For the record, this feature exists in at least a pdf viewer I know of: apvlv (http://naihe2010.github.io/apvlv/)

In Evince you can have two windows of the same document, you only need to "Open a copy" or press Ctrl+N. I use it regularly, with half screen with one document, and the other half with another part of the same document. Whether Evince is going to support a split view on the same window is up to the maintainers, or if somebody is willing to work on a patch on it and the maintainer would be happy with it.
