Description Ankur Sinha (FranciscoD) 2010-12-28 19:37:20 UTC
Hi,

[ankur@ankur 20101225_rati_didi]$ rpm -q gnome-panel
gnome-panel-2.32.0.2-2.fc14.x86_64

The workspace switcher preference for displaying the workspaces in a number of rows is ignored. This has been reported here also:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=479478

regards,
Ankur

It works fine for me, so it is not a "doesn't work at all" bug but a "do for some unknown reason not work in some situations" bug.

Try to create another account (on the same or another machine) and see if you can reproduce it there - or what changes can make the issue go away.

Works fine for me too. Need better steps.

I have Fedora 14, and it started happening to me also after the software updater ran a few days ago.

I created a new user (which started with a clean home directory), and the panel workspace switcher problem still happens. I want a 4x4 grid with 16 workspaces, and on a panel at the top, it put all 16 across, even though I set 4 rows.

In my normal account, I have a panel on the right. If I add a new panel on the top and place a workspace switcher in that panel, it shows all 16 vertically. The problem might be a confusion with the orientation and with the double use of the rows variable based on the orientation.

If it doesn't happen for everyone, it might be specific to Fedora 14 or maybe whether all of the Fedora 14 packages are updated or which Fedora repositories are enabled. After I installed Fedora, I ran
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm

I periodically save the results of "rpm -qa". I compared listings before and
after the problem. The version of gnome-panel did not change. The problem
might be due to a change in another package. Here are some of the changes
(before/after):

boost-1.44.0-1.fc14.i686
boost-1.44.0-4.fc14.i686

dbus-1.4.0-1.fc14.i686
dbus-1.4.0-2.fc14.i686

kernel-2.6.35.6-45.fc14.i686
kernel-2.6.35.10-74.fc14.i686

libwnck-2.30.3-1.fc14.i686
libwnck-2.30.4-1.fc14.i686

xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.9.1-3.fc14.i686
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.9.3-3.fc14.i686

If you want, I could send the full results "rpm -qa" from a bit before the problem started and from shortly after it started.

Let me know if there is anything that I can do to help. I downloaded gnome-panel-2.32.0.2-2.fc14.src.rpm and libwnck-2.30.4-1.fc14.src.rpm, unpacked them with rpm -ivh, and built them with rpmbuild -bc, so I am at a place where I can add patches or debug code.

I do however see one issue: Changing the number of rows isn't shown immediately. Changing the number of workspaces is shown immediately.

(Also on Fedora 14)
