Please consider providing in the "Help" drop-down menu a line "Check for updates". Clicking on this line would provide one of 2 responses, "You are already using the latest version" or "Updates are available. Update now? [Yes] [No]" If the Yes button is clicked 2 responses could be possible; the download begins immediately or the user is redirected to a page that details the specific steps necessary to upgrade from the specific version currently being used to the newest version.

====================
I am a brand new user of GnuCash running on a Windows XP machine. The version I downloaded is 2.2.9. I have just finished creating all of my accounts and categories and am ready to begin adding transactions. 7 days ago 2.4.0 became the latest stable version. The GnuCash homepage warns me "You should uninstall any earlier GnuCash version from your system prior to installing 2.4.0." yet does not tell me how to retain all of the accounts and transactions that are on the version I am using.

Also, further down the page, it states that, "To install GnuCash, you will need Gnome 2, guile, slib. In addition you will need swig if compiling from subversion." But it does not tell me if these applications are provided as part of the Gnucash 2.4.0 Win32 setup executable, or if they are already present for GnuCash users who have earlier versions. Further it does not indicate or provide hotlinks for downloading these applications, either individually or as a group, if that is a necessary step.

Now I am stymied! What am I supposed to do to upgrade? Help!

Thank you for your report.

I can't comment on your enhancement proposal, but I can help you with the upgrade steps.

The information on the website appears to be confusing for Windows users.

It is correct that any older version should be uninstalled before the new version can be installed. However, the windows installer does that automatically for you. Also uninstalling GnuCash won't delete your data (your accounts and transactions and such). This is stored where you have saved it, and the GnuCash installer program won't ever touch that.

As for Gnome 2, guile and friends, these are all included in the GnuCash 2.4.0 Win32 setup executable. There is only one exception: you have to install ActivePerl manually if you wish to use online price quote retrieval.

Other than that, simply download the GnuCash 2.4.0 Win32 setup executable and run it. That should take care of everything for you.

I've re-phrased the website, hoping this is clearer now. I've removed the "uninstall" notice as well because Geert said this is fixed now.
