Radiance in Ubuntu reverts to Gnome Default at startup

This may not even belong here as it is an Ubuntu-specific problem, but we already filed two bug reports about the problem in Launchpad and the developers don't seem be interested helping us at all so far. So maybe someone here can help or has an idea.

In Ubuntu Maverick, lately the Ambiance/Radiance and other themes revert back to Gnome Default when logging in (see attachment). Accessing the Appearance settings manually restores the theme partially (namely the panels, but it refuses to touch Nautilus).
If I select the desired theme, in my case Ambiance, again in the Appearance window and log out and back in to see the theme reverting to Gnome Default again, the selected theme in Appearance is not shown as "Ambiance" but "Custom".

There is speculation that the problem has to do with the gnome-settings-daemon, which doesn't seem to running on startup, or with a package called nvidia-current-modaliases.

You can find a lot of information about the problem in this Ubuntuforums thread with a bunch of people reporting it...

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1575703

...or in the two Launchpad bug reports we filed:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/588155

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/693832

Again, this may not even belong here, but so far - as you can see in the bug reports - there is absolutely no reaction from Ubuntu developers at all, not even confirming that they are aware of the problem. So maybe you guys can motivate them to finally look at the problem, or, if not, maybe you have some idea as to what the problem could be.

A helping hand would be very much appreciated.

Thank You!

An update:

I posted a question on Launchpad asking why the developers don't seem to be aware of our bug reports and I got a following answer:

mycae said 6 minutes ago:

gnome-settings-daemon is maintained by the gnome project (http://www.gnome.org/), which is not related to Canonical.

So chances are that the actual devs are not seeing your bug. If canonical has the resources, or prioritises your bug, then maybe they will look at it themselves, seperately from gnome. But looking at that bug, I (not a dev) have no idea what is going on, and the backtraces provided are not useful, as they do not have debugging symbols. So its not even clear what is going on.

Clarifying this transferrs some of the workload from the devs to the users, and the devs are much fewer in number than users, so this means that your bug is more likely to get fixed if you can at least nail down the problem

You can read the whole thing (including my question) here:

I can confirm this bug (exactly as the original submitter described it), as can many others at Ubuntu forums. The strange thing about it is that it doesn't happen at every log-in (though it does happen most of the time).

I would really like to get this resolved, so if any developers here can give us some hints on how us users can go about helping you debug this, then please let us know.

I habe the same Problem with using nautilus-elementary from this ppa:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa/ubuntu

But the Theme-Problem has not been changed. A solution that was sugested in a german forum is:

gnome-appearance-properties
nautilus -q

also

sudo gnome-appearance-properties

could help for some parts (e.g. Terminals)

I'm not sure if this is exactly anutilus related or a dependency but for sure it has an impact on nautilus.

GNOME cannot fix bugs in Ubuntu. Closing as NOTGNOME.
