I've found the cancel icon in gnome-icon-theme 2.32 to be confusing. 
It looks like a "record" icon (see gnome-sound-recorder for instance). 
It's even more confusing within a audio/video application (1) where the user may expect that kind of functionality.

The issue is in icon-naming-utils' mapping as the metaphor is perfectly appropriate to what the icon in gnome-icon-theme is -- process-stop (gtk-cancel which is yet another X symbol in gtk+ is being symlinked to process-stop). 

The intermediate mapping is being dropped though, so this awkward situation of trying to twist arms to have one metaphor fit two contexts isn't going to be an issue in future.

Closing as wontfix as the metaphor is good for process-stop.
