GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 636891
"Places" should be added to the new overview page
Last modified: 2011-06-02 09:03:35 UTC
Since the merge of the overview-relayout to master, outside of using the search and knowing what your looking for, there appears to be no default way of accessing the "Places" objects that are available in nautilus and gnome 2.x's standard desktop menus. I would like to suggest that a "Places" link/button is added next to the already present "Windows" and "Applications" links available in gnome shell's overview.
This is indeed a problem. We're not sure what we're going to do about it in time, but the suggested "solution" is to pin Nautilus (File Manager) to the favorites by default.
Created attachment 176661 [details] [review] Overview: make SectionViews reusable Take out from SearchDisplay the code to create section views (that is, views of grid items with a title), and place it in a separate module, so that future tabs (Places, Zeitgeits, Contacts...) and extensions can use it.
Created attachment 176662 [details] [review] Overview: add a Places view Re-add what was present before the relayout, that is a view of currently mounted devices, network shares and desktop directiories.
No going to do this. The GNOME 3.0 approach is to make the file manager a favorite application; the "Finding and Reminding" plans will be the more extensive way forward.
I tried using gnome-shell during a day on my main account and the lake of way to quickly access my saved places was one of the issue blocking me from continuing using it...
using nautilus only is silly. one of the strengths of gnome is the integration of things, now we are reversing this? Count me as a vote in favour of reestablishing the "places" menu.
I haven't used Gnome much in the last couple of years. But, I thought I would check it out. Like Guillaume commented before me, the lack of this feature would prohibit me from using Gnome3 Shell! The places menu seems the most natural way to quickly access a file. My cursors drifts that way before I realize it's not there.
That's planned for 3.2, see http://people.gnome.org/~federico/news-2011-05.html#narrative For now, typing the first letters of the name of a place or a recent file will make it appear in the overview. It can be very efficient when you know what you're looking for.
