Description johnston 2001-11-02 22:08:45 UTC
Some filesystems, like bfs, support extended file meta-data - especially
file type metadata. It would be VERY nice, and would speed to adoption of
such filesystems, if GNOME could actually use the metadata stored in those
filesystems. Maybe some sort of plugin architecture for supporting
metadata? I know that there would need to be application support for this
too, but it would be a start if the gnome filesytem stuff would offer an
interface with which to manage this information.

I didn't know you could use BFS with linux. Or are you talking about a
different BFS than the Be filesystem BFS?

Metadata support is slated for 2.2.

http://cs.earlham.edu/~will/software/linux/kernel/BeFS.html

Even if BeFS under Linux does not support advanced metadata, support
for it in the gnome vfs could lead to development of metadata
databases (a-la mySQL or postgres) or even more advanced filesystems
like BeFS.
