GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 636117
Don't show the message tray in the overview
Last modified: 2012-10-31 01:30:50 UTC
Just show the message tray as normal when in the overview - don't force it to the open state. Reasons: 1. It introduces an inconsistent interaction model for the messaging tray. Usually, a user can open and close it using actions which become familiar. The 'stay open in the overview' behaviour introduces a quirk that they have to get used to. Much better to have each element consistently operate in single manner, rather than changing how it works based on context. 2. It's additional visual noise. The overview already has a lot going on. The messaging tray being visible takes us another step away from that simple and clean interface that we all want. 3. It isn't necessary. Someone doesn't go into the overview to see their messages. They go into it to open an app or switch to a window (etc).
Not sure - the current behavior seems consistent to me in the sense of "Overview" == "All the stuff going on". On the other hand, this would simplify the message tray code quite a bit ...

Although it's no longer "all the stuff going on in a single glance", since you only see one workspace at a time. And if bug 651569 is committed, you won't see hidden/minimized windows in the overview. Allan, have you talked about this with Jon? He had specifically requested the current behavior, so I'm wondering if this is "the designers have changed their mind" or just "the designers disagree".

I speak for myself. :) Adding the ui-review keyword...

I agree with Day, I'd much like to see this bug implemented.
Jon, can you comment on this?
The message tray design is evolving elsewhere. Closing this since it doesn't seem to be needed.
