gnome-screenshot does only take only a screenshot from the whole screen, or from the focused window when you press the "print screen" key.

It should be possible to select the area of the taken screenshot in the gnome-screenshot-gui dialog that is saved as a graphics file.

In the moment you have to start gnome-screenshot from the gnome menu to use this feature.
