GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 635017
Files that are renamed are not re-sorted in new order
Last modified: 2014-08-25 18:26:21 UTC
If I have two files, say 1.xxx and 2.xxx in a folder, and the file listing shows them with 1.xxx first, then 2.xxx below it, and then I rename 1.xxx to 3.xxx, the new listing shows as 3.xxx followed by 2.xxx below. This is contrary to the way every other operating system works, and indeed different from the default behavior of the command line ls command. (YES, I HAVE set the desired display properties). To be 100% clear, I get this incorrect behavior on one computer, whereas it is OK on another, both with Ubuntu 10.04 installed. I have re-installed Nautilus but am reluctant to totally remove it as that might remove other elements of the GNOME environment and break other things as well. Another way of describing this bug is that Nautilus is displaying files in the order that they were initially placed into the folder; I believe that when I tried to ask for display by modification date, that preference was also ignored. In other words, Nautilus seems to be ALWAYS displaying files by creation (or copied into) date/time, ignoring user preference.

Can't reproduce this here. Is this still an issue with 3.6? Are you using list of icon view? It seems like you may have have some kind of manual layout enabled. Try resetting the view to defaults.
