Description Ondra Pelech 2010-11-16 16:42:22 UTC
The "Open location..." dialogue is quite powerful.
It opens various URLs (http://server.com/path/to/video.mkv,... ) from the net, but also locations from the local file-system (file:///home/john/Videos/video.mkv), which might be sometimes very useful (i.e. when you have a content of a video DVD copied inside a directory (file:///home/john/Videos/CopyOfDVD/)).
But it's soft of a hidden feature, I myself discovered it by an accident.

My suggestion is: add to the dialogue a "Browse file-system" button.

But that's what the “Open…” dialogue already does…

if you mean the Movie->Open... dialogue, that one doesn't allow you to open a whole folder (which is essential if you want to play that DVD copy mentioned in the bug description).

maybe this bug could be reinterpreted as 'allow for Open... dialogue to open folders'. because now, the only way is to use "Open location..." and than via "file:///home/..."

I see. How about adding an “Open Directory” button to the normal “Open…” dialogue instead? I think that would be a neater solution, by conceptually keeping all local filesystem operations inside the “Open…” dialogue.

sounds fair to me ;)
