GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 634619
Preferred Applications is a little confusing
Last modified: 2011-03-17 14:46:24 UTC
This report was originally filled at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/416624 The options in Preferred Applications are very redundant and don't seem to be geared toward the end user. You can see in the attached mockup by David Siegel how it could be a little easier, and still be powerful. Please see attached mockups, [1]https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/416624/+attachment/673761/+files/Preferred%20Applications.png [2]https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/416624/+attachment/673764/+files/Preferred%20Applications.png This updated mockup demonstrates small changes to the Preferred Applications window. * Removed repeated use of "Open link in" from UI for defining link-opening behavior. * Removed the custom command UI from the window. The label "Custom," inactive text entry, and inactive checkbox with label "Run in terminal" add a lot of complexity, duplication, and distraction to the window. * Added "Custom..." entry to the application combo boxes. Choosing custom shows a "Custom Command" dialog, where the user has more room to enter a custom command, and choose whether to run in a terminal.
Those options are gone in git master, at least for web browsers and mail readers. The 'Custom' thing is still on the other tabs, so maybe we should be doing this for those
We got rid of all the "Custom" entries in the default applications section of the Info panel.
