This is the sort order which nautilus produces using LC_COLLATE=en_US.UTF-8

Xy
xz
y1
y3
Y2
zx1
Zy2
zz3

The x* files sort in the expected case-insensitive order.
The y* files are (or should be) breaking on the differing digits which seems to make the sort key preserve case. 
The z* files sort in the expected case-insensitive way, I think because they are breaking on differing letters. The mere presence of digits isn't enough to cause the semi case-sensitive behaviour.

This affects compact, icon, and list view.
