gdm 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu3 causes permanent crashes
Last modified: 2010-10-24 17:23:53 UTC
Using open source drivers with Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.32-25-generic nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8600M GS] (rev a1) nvidia-current nv, nouveau, resulted minor problems - 2d artifacts and X crash after 1h - a few days from Xorg.0.log [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop. (In reply to comment #0) > gdm 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu3 causes permanent crashes > Downgrading to 2.30.0-0ubuntu5 resolved this problem 0ubuntu5 is NEWER than 0ubuntu3, hence that is no "downgrading" but "updating". Also, why is this a GNOME issue and not an Ubuntu issue? Did you file a report in Ubuntu's bugtracker?
I am not familiar with versioning in ubuntu but in the synaptic I had to force older version and this version was marked with star. and 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu3 in my opinion is higher than 2.30.0-0ubuntu5 because 2.30.2 > 2.30.0 Also submitted as an Ubuntu issue. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/657336 I am sorry but downgrading to gdm 2.30.0-0ubuntu5 didn't resolve the problem. The error is still present. My case most likely is following : 1. the bug occurs -> [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop. 2. overheating of nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8600M GS] (rev a1) 3. artifacts are present 4. crash of X or whole Linux The GPU usage is important - Dual screen and high resultions are the reasons of more frequent overheating and crashes.
